As we approach Halloween this year, it's important to ensure that our furry friends stay safe and happy during the festivities. While Halloween celebrations may still involve an abundance of candy (for your kids) and fun (for everyone), we want to provide you with tips to protect your dog and ensure they enjoy the night, too! 5 Tips for a Safe and Healthy Halloween with Your Dog Keep Paws Off the Sweets: Avoid any unexpected trips to the emergency vet by securing candy and sugary treats away from your furry companions. Store them out of reach, higher than counter height (we all know that dog that likes to counter surf), in order to prevent your dog from indulging in chocolates, sugars, and other potentially hazardous ingredients when you're not looking. Wondering why chocolate made the list? Chocolate contains a compound called theobromine that is toxic to dogs. Also, remember that xylitol, a sugar substitute found in many sugar-free candies, gums and baked goods, is toxic to dogs, so be extra cautious if you snack on these types of treats. (If you think your dog has ingested chocolate or something containing xylitol–contact your veterinarian immediately.) Provide a Safe Space: Some dogs may find Halloween costumes and the commotion outside unsettling. Ensure your dog's safety and comfort by keeping them indoors in a familiar space where they feel secure. For some dogs, this might mean being in their crate, while others may prefer lounging on their bed with a favorite toy. If you expect trick-or-treaters, consider using a baby gate to prevent your pup from bolting out the door and potentially getting lost in the fun chaos that ensues on Halloween night. Watch for signs of stress: Do new sounds and activities make your dog stressed? Turn the TV to an instrumental music channel during Halloween festivities away from the commotion and keep them busy with a healthy long-term chew option. Ensure they are snacking safely by using a Bow Wow Buddy. Did you know? The act of chewing releases serotonin and dopamine, two neurotransmitters known to support a calm mental state. Create a Dog-Friendly Environment: Dogs are naturally curious and like to investigate new objects with their mouths. Keep homemade decorations, such as hanging ghosts and other decorative items, out of your dog's reach to prevent accidental ingestion. Even if they don’t ingest the entirety of the decor–if they are the sort of pup that likes to get into mischief–a piece can be swallowed if torn or chewed off. While you are at it, ensure lit up jack-o-lanterns are placed well away from wagging tails to avoid accidents or burns. Be Costume Conscious: While dressing up your dog as a taco or any other adorable character can be fun, always prioritize their comfort and safety. Make sure the costume fits correctly and doesn't obstruct their vision, breathing, or movement. Consider using bandannas, capes, or festive accessories as alternatives to full costumes, as long as they allow your dog to move freely and comfortably. This Halloween, regardless of how you choose to celebrate, remember to keep your beloved pet safely at home. By following these tips, you can ensure that your dog has a safe and happy Howl-oween!
